Historical context

Its membership changed over time, but figures including Robespierre, Saint-Just and Carnot became closely associated with its work.
The Committee is essential to understanding how the Republic concentrated authority in response to emergency. It coordinated war, administration and political security and became closely linked in historical memory with the Reign of Terror.
