Historical context
Bernard Montgomery took command of the British Eighth Army in 1942 and led it at the Second Battle of El Alamein. He later commanded major Allied formations during the campaigns in Sicily, Normandy and northwest Europe.
Montgomery played a central role in British and Allied land operations from 1942 onward. His methods emphasized preparation, concentration of force and deliberate battle, while his command relationships frequently generated controversy.
