Georges Lemaître was a Belgian physicist, priest and cosmologist who applied general relativity to the universe as a whole. In the 1920s he developed expanding-universe solutions and connected them with astronomical observations.
Lemaître later proposed that the universe developed from an extremely dense early state, an important precursor of modern Big Bang cosmology. His work connected theoretical physics with the new observational study of galaxies.
