Nicolaus Copernicus transformed early modern astronomy by developing a mathematical planetary system in which Earth moved around the Sun. His De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, published in 1543, did not immediately settle every astronomical problem, but it changed the framework in which those problems were discussed.
Copernicus is central to the transition from inherited geocentric models to heliocentric astronomy. His work became the point of departure for Kepler, Galileo and later Newtonian celestial mechanics.
