Vera Rubin was an observational astronomer whose studies of spiral-galaxy rotation curves provided powerful evidence that visible matter cannot account for the motions of stars within galaxies.
Her measurements helped make dark matter a central problem in modern astrophysics and cosmology. They also show how precision observations of galaxies can reveal large-scale physical components that cannot be seen directly.
