James V is taken on justice ayres while Angus uses the king's authority to strengthen Douglas control.

James V rules in name while competing noble factions struggle to control royal policy and the king's person.

Parliament passes an act forbidding the import of Lutheran books into Scotland.

James V becomes effectively controlled by the Red Douglases after Angus refuses to give up custody of him.

Crowned for a 2nd time by the Earl of Angus

Escapes from Edinburgh Castle where he had been held captive by the Earl of Angus

Escapes to Stirling where a small army of Anguss enemies gather around him

At the age of 16 takes over direct rule after exiling the Earl of Angus

Given permission by the Pope to draw œ10,000 from the Church for a College of Justice

An Anglo-Scots Peace Treaty is signed

Visits France where Francis I offers Marie de Vendome as a bride. Attends a marriage service of the daughter of Vendome but finds her too unattractive. Asks to marry Francis Is daughter Madeleine, the French King agrees

Death of Madeleine, Jamess wife is killed by the Scottish climate, age 16. The frail 16 year old dies in July after moving to Scotland from the Loire Valley

Francis I sends Mary of Guise to marry James V, she has a dowry of 150,000 livres

Does not fight at Solway Moss. His army suffers a humiliating defeat while he remains away from the battlefield, already ill.

Retires to Falkland Palace seriously ill after the Solway Moss crisis; his condition worsens while he awaits news of the royal birth.

Dies at Falkland Palace six days after the birth of his daughter Mary, leaving the Scottish crown to the infant queen.
