Historical context

Silent Cinema, 1915–1929: overview and significance

What happened?

During the mature silent era, filmmakers expanded feature-length storytelling, studio production and international distribution. Comedy, drama, expressionism and large-scale spectacle all developed distinctive visual languages.

Why was it important?

Silent cinema established many of the techniques that remain fundamental to screen storytelling. Its stars and directors created internationally recognisable styles before synchronised dialogue transformed production.
