Historical overview

From motion experiments and silent film to modern global cinema

The archive spans more than a century of film history, linking technologies, national cinemas, performers, directors, awards and individual productions.

Origins and projection

Late nineteenth-century motion studies and projector systems helped turn sequential photography into public moving-image entertainment. By the mid-1890s film exhibition was becoming an international commercial activity.

Silent cinema

Feature production, editing, visual comedy and star culture developed rapidly before synchronised dialogue became standard. Filmmakers created sophisticated visual styles across Europe and the United States.

Sound and studio cinema

The transition to sound changed acting, production and exhibition. Large studios refined genre filmmaking and star systems while British, German, American and other national industries developed distinct traditions.

Post-war international cinema

After 1945 Japanese and European directors gained wider international audiences through festivals, distribution and critical recognition, while British and American performers built increasingly mobile careers.

Director-led and blockbuster eras

From the 1960s and 1970s, established studio practices coexisted with new director-led production, changing censorship and the growth of blockbuster filmmaking and global franchises.

Digital and contemporary cinema

Digital effects, digital cinematography, streaming and worldwide distribution transformed production and viewing while awards, festivals and long-running careers continued to connect modern cinema with earlier traditions.
