Observed that the solar latitudes at which sunspots occur varies in a regular way over the course of an 11 year cycle & in 1904 publishes his results in the form of the "butterfly" diagram. Edward Maunder suggests that the Sun had changed from a period in which sunspots all but disappeared from the solar surface to a renewal of sunspot cycles starting in 1700
