Historical context
General Leopoldo Galtieri headed Argentina's military junta during the invasion of the Falkland Islands. His government expected the occupation to strengthen Argentina's sovereignty claim and domestic legitimacy.
The defeat destroyed much of the junta's remaining political authority. Galtieri left office soon after the war, and the conflict accelerated Argentina's transition away from military dictatorship toward democratic rule.
