Falklands War ยท permanent subject timeline
The sovereignty dispute, South Georgia crisis and road to war. This page combines historical context with 108 matching records drawn directly from the World History Database Falklands War archive.
Historical context
The 1982 war developed from a long-running sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Islas Malvinas. Tensions intensified in late 1981 and early 1982, particularly after the South Georgia scrap-metal landing associated with Constantino Davidoff.
The conflict did not begin with the landing on 2 April in isolation. Diplomatic tension, domestic political pressures and events on South Georgia formed the immediate background to Argentina's decision to occupy the islands and Britain's decision to send a naval task force.
