Historical context

South Georgia and Operation Paraquet: overview and significance

What happened?

South Georgia became one of the first military objectives of the British campaign. After difficult operations involving ships, helicopters and special forces, Argentine forces at Grytviken surrendered on 25 April 1982.

Why was it important?

The recapture of South Georgia provided an early British military success and demonstrated the task force's ability to conduct operations in severe South Atlantic conditions before the main landings on East Falkland.
