Historical context
British ground forces landed around San Carlos Water on East Falkland during Operation Sutton on 21 May 1982. The landing created the bridgehead from which the campaign on land could develop.
San Carlos became the decisive amphibious lodgment of the war. Argentine aircraft repeatedly attacked ships supporting the landing, turning the surrounding waters into one of the most dangerous operational areas of the campaign.
