RMS Carpathia Rescue: overview and significance

What happened?

RMS Carpathia received Titanic's distress traffic and Captain Arthur Rostron immediately altered course toward the reported position. Carpathia reached the scene after the sinking and took survivors from the lifeboats aboard.

Why was it important?

Carpathia's response saved hundreds of people who otherwise faced prolonged exposure in the North Atlantic. The rescue became a major part of both survivor testimony and public memory of the disaster.
