Historical context

Titanic Lifeboats: overview and significance

What happened?

Titanic carried twenty lifeboats and collapsibles. As the ship sank, officers and crew prepared and launched boats from both sides under difficult conditions, often before their full capacity had been used.

Why was it important?

Lifeboat capacity, loading practice, drills and evacuation procedures became some of the most consequential issues investigated after the disaster and influenced later maritime safety regulation.
