Historical context

Battle of Narvik: overview and significance

What happened?

Narvik became the focus of intense fighting after Germany invaded Norway in April 1940. British and Norwegian forces contested the port and surrounding mountains while Royal Navy actions destroyed German destroyers in the fjords.

Why was it important?

The campaign showed the strategic importance of Norway and Swedish iron-ore routes. Allied troops temporarily retook Narvik but were evacuated after the German breakthrough in France transformed the wider strategic situation.
