What happened?
Box Tunnel carried the Great Western Railway through Box Hill between Bath and Swindon. Its length, gradients and construction demands made it one of the most prominent railway tunnelling projects of the early Victorian period.
Why was it important?
The tunnel demonstrated the scale of civil engineering required to maintain Brunel's preferred railway alignment. It became a landmark of the original Great Western main line.
