South Devon Railway: overview and significance

What happened?

The South Devon Railway extended the Great Western system from Exeter toward Plymouth through challenging coastal and hilly terrain. Brunel used major earthworks, sea walls and initially atmospheric traction.

Why was it important?

The route demonstrates the difficulty of extending railways through demanding geography while preserving workable gradients. It also became the setting for Brunel's most famous failed railway technology, the atmospheric system.
