Royal Albert Bridge: overview and significance

What happened?

The Royal Albert Bridge carries the Cornwall Railway across the Tamar between Devon and Cornwall. Brunel used large lenticular trusses combining tubular compression members with suspension chains.

Why was it important?

Opened in 1859, the bridge was one of Brunel's final major works and solved the problem of crossing a navigable tidal river without obstructing shipping. Its distinctive spans remain a major surviving example of his structural engineering.
