Historical context
Isambard Kingdom Brunel won the competition to design a suspension bridge across the Avon Gorge at Clifton. Construction began in 1831 but financial difficulties delayed completion until after Brunel's death.
The bridge became one of the most recognizable works associated with Brunel. Its long gestation illustrates the financial and organizational difficulties of major infrastructure as well as the ambition of nineteenth-century bridge engineering.
