What happened?
In November 1642 Royalist forces approaching London faced a much larger Parliamentarian and militia force around Turnham Green. Charles I chose not to force a major battle and withdrew.
Why was it important?
Turnham Green prevented the king from exploiting the road to the capital after Edgehill. Parliament retained London, its financial resources and a crucial strategic base.
