What happened?
Bristol changed hands during the Civil War and became a major Royalist base after its capture in 1643. Parliament's New Model Army recovered the city in 1645 after a renewed siege.
Why was it important?
Control of Bristol mattered because of its port, wealth and position between the Midlands, Wales and the south-west. Its loss in 1645 weakened the Royalist strategic position after Naseby.
