Historical context
U.S. troops landed at Utah Beach on the Cotentin Peninsula. Currents carried the first waves south of the planned landing area, where Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt Jr. supported continuing the assault from the actual landing point.
Utah linked the seaborne assault with American airborne operations inland and supported the subsequent drive toward Cherbourg. Casualties were lighter than at Omaha.
