6 June 1944 · Operation Overlord

D-Day & the Normandy Landings

D-Day was the opening assault of the Allied invasion of Normandy. Before dawn on 6 June 1944, airborne forces landed behind the coast; naval and air bombardment followed, and American, British and Canadian troops came ashore at Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. The beachheads opened a major western front in Europe. The campaign then expanded through the battles for Cherbourg and Caen, the American breakout during Operation Cobra and the closing of the Falaise Pocket in August.
