Battle of Dien Bien Phu 1954: Siege, Timeline and French Defeat

The Battle of Dien Bien Phu was the decisive confrontation of the First Indochina War. French forces established a fortified base in the remote valley, expecting to draw the Viet Minh into a battle in which French artillery and air power could dominate. Instead, General Vo Nguyen Giap's forces surrounded the position, brought heavy artillery into the surrounding heights and progressively reduced the French strongpoints.

The fall of the garrison in May 1954 transformed the diplomatic situation. The defeat accelerated negotiations at Geneva and marked the end of France's attempt to restore colonial control across Indochina. The chronology below consolidates related database records so repeated descriptions attached to different people do not appear as separate historical events.
