Historical context

Battle of Arnhem: overview and significance

What happened?

British and Polish airborne forces landed around Arnhem in September 1944 as part of Operation Market Garden. A small British force reached the Rhine bridge, while stronger German resistance prevented the main airborne division from consolidating the objective.

Why was it important?

Failure to hold the Arnhem bridge prevented the Allies from establishing the intended crossing of the lower Rhine. The battle became one of the most studied airborne operations of the war.
