Historical context

Battle of Kursk: overview and significance

What happened?

Germany launched Operation Citadel against the Kursk salient in July 1943. Soviet forces constructed deep defensive zones and absorbed the German attacks before launching major counter-offensives.

Why was it important?

Kursk ended Germany's ability to mount another strategic offensive of comparable scale in the east. The Red Army increasingly held the initiative and began sustained advances toward the west.
