A raid on Paul Krugers Transvaal Republic carried out by a British colonial statesman Leander Starr Jameson and his Rhodesian and Bechuanaland policemen over the New Year weekend of 1895-96. A failed atempt to overthrow the Transvaal Government

Intended to trigger an uprising by the primarily British expatriate workers (known as Uitlanders) in the Transvaal but fails to do so.

Sends a telegram to Rhodes warning him of his intentions, Jamesons force cross into the Transvaal and head for Johannesburg. Leads 800 men in an abortive attempt to begin a Uitlander uprising.

The plan is to make a 3 day dash to Johannesburg before the Boer commandos could mobilise, and once there, trigger an uprising by the primarily British expatriate workers (uitlanders) organised by the Reform Committee.

Defeated by the Boers

Around noon the Jameson force is around twenty miles further on, at Krugersdorp, where a small force of Boer soldiers had blocked the road to Johannesburg and digs in

Turned over to the British for trial in England

The tired Jameson raiders exchange fire with the Boers, losing around thirty men before Jameson realizes the position is hopeless and surrenders to Commander Piet Cronje, the raiders are taken to Pretoria and jail. The Boers track the move overnight and as the light improves Jameson reaches Doornkop where a substantial Boer force with some artillery is waiting

The Jameson Raid ends in failure and its participants are handed over for trial.

Turned over to the British for trial in England. Surrenders to a Boer force led by General Cronje at Doorn Kop
