Historical context
Marc Brunel designed a coordinated series of machines for producing ships' pulley blocks at Portsmouth Dockyard. Developed with Henry Maudslay and supported by naval administrator Samuel Bentham, the system mechanised many stages of production.
The Portsmouth machinery is an important early example of industrial mass production using specialized machine tools and standardized sequences. It demonstrated that skilled manual processes could be reorganized into repeatable mechanised manufacture at large scale.
