Historical context
Marc Brunel patented a tunnelling shield in 1818. Workers excavated from protected compartments while brick lining was constructed behind the advancing structure, reducing some of the risks of driving a tunnel through unstable ground.
The shield supplied the key technical idea that made the Thames Tunnel possible and became an ancestor of modern shield tunnelling and tunnel-boring practice. It is one of Marc Brunel's most durable engineering innovations.
