Historical context
Royalist and Parliamentarian armies met at Edgehill on 23 October 1642. Cavalry successes on the Royalist wings did not produce a decisive victory, while Parliament's infantry remained sufficiently intact to prevent a complete defeat.
Edgehill showed that neither side could end the war quickly. The inconclusive result was followed by a Royalist advance toward London and the confrontation at Turnham Green.
