Historical context
Charles II became king in Royalist eyes after his father's execution and entered Scotland before leading a combined force into England in 1651. His campaign ended in defeat at Worcester.
His survival and escape preserved the Stuart dynasty in exile. Nine years later he returned during the Restoration of 1660.
