Historical context
Elections to the Constituent Assembly took place after the October Revolution. The Socialist Revolutionaries won the largest overall vote, and when the Assembly met in January 1918 it refused to accept the Bolshevik political settlement and was dispersed after one sitting.
The dissolution was a defining step in the consolidation of Bolshevik rule. It showed that Soviet institutions and revolutionary authority would take precedence over the nationwide parliamentary assembly long demanded by opposition movements.
