Historical context

July Days of 1917: overview and significance

What happened?

During the July Days armed workers, soldiers and sailors demonstrated in Petrograd demanding a transfer of power to the soviets. The government suppressed the movement, Bolshevik leaders were arrested or forced into hiding and the party suffered a temporary political setback.

Why was it important?

The crisis showed both the radicalization of sections of the capital and the limits of Bolshevik control over popular action. The party recovered quickly when later events further damaged the Provisional Government.
