Historical context
The Bolsheviks entered 1917 as one current within Russian socialism. Through opposition to the Provisional Government, anti-war agitation and organization around the demand for Soviet power, the party expanded rapidly during the revolutionary year.
The Bolsheviks' rise reflected both their own political strategy and the failures of the existing government to resolve war, land and economic crises. By autumn they held majorities in important soviets and were positioned to organize an armed transfer of power.
