Historical context
In October 1917 by the old Russian calendar, Bolshevik-led forces acting through the Military Revolutionary Committee occupied strategic points in Petrograd and displaced the Provisional Government. The Second Congress of Soviets then became the forum for the transfer of authority.
The October Revolution created a Bolshevik-led government and transformed Russian and world politics. It opened new struggles over Soviet power, war, land, property, political representation and the form of the new state.
