Mary I, succession, religion and rebellion

Mary I’s accession followed the failed attempt to place Lady Jane Grey on the throne. Her reign then combined a Catholic religious restoration with the marriage to Philip of Spain, Wyatt’s Rebellion, continuing succession anxiety and renewed war with France.

See the Tudor family tree for Mary’s place in Henry VIII’s succession, the Tudor plots and rebellions page for the Dudley and Wyatt networks, and the Elizabeth I records for the transition after 1558.
